Last year, Shri UT Khader, Minister for Health and Family Welfare, spoke at length with students from SDMCNYS. What was unique about this? Both the minister and the students were on a therapeutic ten-day fast. The minister was undergoing the fast under Dr. Prashanth Shetty, CMO, SDMYNCH, Dharmasthala, and I was guiding the students on their fast at SDMCNYS, Ujire.
No, not as a strike or protest. It is a part of their syllabus. It was a wonderful experience for me and for them. We learnt many things about the body, about health and about nature that only a fast can teach. We had such amazing fun, I’m sure none of us would ever forget those ten days! We also conducted a research study and found that fasting reduces stress and reduces the acidity of their urine.
For ten days starting tomorrow, the current third year BNYS students of SDM College of Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences (SDMCNYS) are going to undergo a similar fast.
BNYS (Bachelor of Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences) is a five and half years’ medical degree course that trains and certifies one to be a doctor who heals without medicines. Students who undergo this course graduate as Doctors of Naturopathy and Yoga. They have a wide range of therapies that they learn in their syllabus, all of which have the same underlying principle – they are drugless.
As a part of their practical classes, third year BNYS students of SDMCNYS are going to be fasting for ten days from tomorrow. Fasting therapy is a subject that is taught in the third year of BNYS. Calorie restriction and Intermittent Fasting is being deeply researched into today, and is showing promising results in treating illnesses ranging from colds to cancers, and even seems to slow down the aging process!
Fast to Heal
Students of the college routinely go on fasts to improve their health. If anyone falls ill with a cold, cough and fever, they promptly stop eating and help their body heal itself by taking rest, being calm and taking enema and other simple therapies until they recover completely. Many people who came to SDMCNYS for inter-college events have commented that the students look much healthier and fitter than those in their own college. This is one of the secrets of their health, during the course and after graduating as well.
For a major part of the ten days, the students will be eating nothing – they will be drinking only water and lemon juice with honey. They will work into the fast and out of the fast systematically, taking a couple of days before and after. During the day, they will practice a lot of relaxation and meditation techniques from different schools of yoga, stay connected to nature with the birds, trees, plants and animals around the college, which is in the heart of the Western Ghats.
The day starts with yoga and ends with a prayer session in the evening, which will include a meditation session as well. The students are encouraged to document all their experiences by the lecturers and seniors guiding them, because learning by experience is the best way to learn something like this.
I was lucky to be a part of this event last year, and I wish I could be there with them this year, too. Here’s wishing all the students a great fast! Hope you all have the time of your lives, and learn a lot from the experience. There are millions of people waiting to get healed by you. May this fast give you the experience you need to help them heal themselves.
