First of all, let me tell you, this is a blog sparked by personal experience. My affair with regular perfumes began when I was 13, and ended when I was 21. Read this is you love perfume – and if you don’t!
I stopped using all cosmetics, those I thought weren’t essential and then those I thought were essential, too. What prompted me to do this? The fact that no animal uses anything except water and occasionally, mud.
When I say wear nothing, I’m not talking about clothes. I’m talking about soaps, shampoos, conditioners, lotions, deodorants, perfumes, body sprays, moisturizers, and creams.
Let me explain why every one of these, marketed to enhance appeal, actually do the opposite. Before that, take a look at perfume ads, starting with ads like this:
To more to-the-point ones like this one:
Ending up in more graphic ads like this one today:
Soaps, shampoos and cleaning products are given much more hype than warranted – they do little except to ruin the skin in many cases. I’m not kidding. Take a look at your own toothpaste and shampoo – yes, the ones sitting on your bathroom shelf now. Read the list of ingredients, and look them up online. You’ll be shocked at their side effects, ranging from dry skin to cancer!
Forget about perfumes and lotions, the market for bathing soaps is huge in India – at more than Rs.204 billion! An ASSOCHAM study conducted on World Youth Day (August 12) in 2013 revealed the average Indian youth spends a whopping Rs. 4,500 every month on cosmetics alone. It must be much more today.
If you notice, throughout history, there has always been just one thing perfume companies have tried to tell you. Take a look at these, and it isn’t difficult to figure out what:
If you still haven’t understood, you’re probably too young to be interested in perfumes anyway.
Ask anyone why they use these products and they will tell you ‘bad smell’. Well, have you heard of pheromones? Those chemicals secreted by your skin that attract the opposite gender? Here’s the deal: the more artificial scent you put on, the less those pheromones will go through. A lot of research has gone into this statement. Watch this video, about one of the first studies that researched into human mate choice:
A group of men were asked to wear the same t-shirt for two nights in a row, and then hand it over to this group of scientists, who then asked a group of women to smell the t-shirts and rate the sex appeal of the men – solely based on the smell. The women consistently rated the shirts of men they were unrelated to, higher.
It works the other way too – a study published in the Psychological Science journal showed that men not only liked the smell of tee shirts worn by ovulating women, but they actually had higher levels of circulating testosterone after the smelling session.
Every animal on the planet uses this to attract its mate. Don’t be fooled by an advertisement for an artificial scent. Stop using all kinds of cosmetics for a few days and switch to a natural diet. In short, let your pheromones diffuse through! I speak with experience of many people, trust me on this one. Try it for two weeks, and if it doesn’t leave you smelling awesome, give me a call.
