“It’s genetic” has come to mean something that is beyond our control. This is one of the most crazy, dangerous notions. For most people, this means ‘Genes = things that can’t be changed’. This makes you and everyone around you stop working towards changing these things, bound by a feeling that trying to change it is useless. This includes behaviours as well as diseases like ADHD, Schizophrenia, Cancers and many other conditions.
I have heard this excuse from countless patients, every single time as an excuse not to do something about their health. It is not a small issue. It is a dangerous one. And this excuse is not just used for things like antisocial behaviour, but also for dangerous, debilitating diseases, which makes it worse.
I initially set out to write a blog on this, but then came across this amazing video, which does all the explaining. An excerpt: “… none of these are genetically determined. Breast cancer, for example. Out of 100 women with breast cancer, only 7 will carry the breast cancer genes. 93% will not. And out of a hundred women who do have the gene, not all are gonna get cancer.” Check it out:
This is an excerpt from a documentary called ‘Moving Forward’. Watch the whole documentary online here.
