Fasting for ten days – In a remote corner of Karnataka, in a sleepy town called Ujire, a group of nearly hundred medical students fasted for ten days.
No, they were not on strike, and no, it was not Ramzan. These students are studying BNYS (Bachelor of Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences) at SDM College of Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences. For five and half long years, they learn about every conceivable way of healing without medicines – something many of us fantasise about. They are the bridge between our traditional lifestyle and health practices and scientific research, and true practitioners of Holistic Healing.
As a part of their syllabus, the third year BNYS students – nearly a hundred of them – fasted for ten days, to practically experience the amazing benefits of fasting therapy on themselves. Along with the practical experience, there were a number of research studies conducted on them by Dr. Prashanth Shetty, principal, Dr. Sujatha, Dean of Natural Therapeutics, Dr. Geetha, Dr. Chethan and others in the faculty. Each day, one of them wrote a blog and published it on www.naturopathyoga.org, and the blogs went viral within the Naturopathy community. People all over the world read them and wrote back to show their appreciation.
Politicians, naturopaths, allopaths, gynecologists, dentists, medical associations, nurses, social workers, yoga experts, naturalists, musician, athletes and parents wrote to us congratulating the students for having achieved this remarkable feat. We decided to give the students a surprise.
The day after they completed their fast, after the classes were over, during the evening prayer session, the students were called forward and presented with a poster made by the first year students, with all the messages from people all over the world. They were thrilled to have received all these wonderful messages, and spent hours reading through them. Today, the poster is proudly displayed in their classroom.
Check out what some people had to say about these amazing students!
Fasting is the Royal road to heal disease. Healing is within the body – this is achieved through fasting therapy. But, in the process, crises should be handled should be managed carefully. I am happy that BNYS students and staff are creating a database of studies on fasting therapy. Nowadays I have noticed practitioners diluting fasting therapy in clinical practice. I hope this activity brings light on encouraging significance of fasting therapy in due course of time. My best wishes to the team of students.
Happy to hear that you are on a ten-day fast. We Naturopaths must experience fasting before prescribing it to patients, to understand that it is not an impossibility, but a true enjoyment, together with healing. My last experience was when I got 4 days continuous Government holidays. I utilized all four days for fasting at Uruli Kanchan. As Neera was available there, I had only water and Neera – but hardly two glasses of Neera and two to three glasses of water only! Why? Because fasting is total rest, body self-detoxes and we must not disturb its purpose by over drinking if no excess thirst is felt. Just enjoy the rest and body’s cleansing. After three to four days, do self scanning and you will experience the transparency of all internal organs, a really beautiful experience! I hope you enjoyed this stage during your fast.I congratulate all who voluntarily abstained from all food, solid or liquid, that demands digestion, simultaneously with physical, physiological, sensory and mental rest, in other words, true fasting.Congratulations!
It is good to hear that students are given practical exposure to fasting. I hope this ten day fast has created a better understanding and confidence about fasting. Learn to use it wisely – that comes with self experience and keen observation. Hope you were taught all of that very well.
I whole heartedly appreciate the efforts of your principal, staff and all of you for such effort being initiated and continued. It would be an enriching experience for you all if expert guests are invited during the fasting period for detailed lectures.
I appreciate the students who voluntarily observed mouna for these ten days. Hope this fasting served as a metamorphosis for you all physically and mentally. Nature is the best healer.
May this fasting practical session continue forever with improvement every year.
Fasting is one of the best remedies for all and is said to be one of the Arts of Living. In order to prolong life, one should not count years in life, but instead seek positive life in years. Many talk about naturopathy as so simple in its application, but in reality it is difficult to create a suitable application to lead a complete healthy and happy life. Students should add skills with knowledge in such a way that it changes living styles into Art of Living. All the best also to the researches studying the effect of fasting on the students. Achievements come from learning, Success comes when you create life in yourself.
I wish all sprouting Naturopaths a Great Success in their career!

Yoga says no matter how much knowledge you gain from studying scriptures, only perceived experiences gives the ultimate knowledge – Sampoorna Jnana, to be preserved for a lifetime and beyond. Hence, this meager ten days of fasting will go a long way in establishing utmost confidence in your practice and preaching of good health. All the very best!

Hi my dear juniors!I have been following Achyuthan’s blog from some time and I felt so nice when I saw that my juniors, the whole class, is sincerely going to experience fasting. Preventive and curative aspects of fasting have been known since ages. It is so important to experience it yourself in order to administer it to patients effectively.I appreciate your efforts to experience the effects of fasting and gain confidence of this therapeutic modality. This experience that you all have gained in this 5 days will definitely be of great use in the coming years as practicing Naturopaths.
– Dr. Ameya Abhishek, Pune
My beloved juniors, learn as much as you can experientially as yoga and nature cure are ways of life and this will strengthen your faith and your confidence. We are harbingers of a new era of health in true essence. Fulfill your destiny as nature’s healing angels. All the best!
Fasting is the soul of naturopathic treatment. During the BNYS course, it is a great experience for us. It enriches our knowledge, boosts up confidence. In all health care systems of the world, fasting is one of the few therapies that the doctor has to experience first, before the patient. So enjoy and observe every second with inner peace. It will transform u. All the best!
Really good to see students doing fasting voluntarily. Its really difficult to take initiation to do fasting, but you are doing really good. It will be useful for you for your future practice also to prescribe fasting to others since you have experienced it and know its benefits. Wishing you all a healthy life. God bless you.
Fasting is a scary thing to do! Imagine not eating anything for a whole day! Now imagine not eating anything for 10 whole days!!! What courage!! What determination!! By going on a ten-day fast at such a tender age, these youngsters have truly conquered themselves! I wish them all the very best on this, and all their future journeys. May they continue to conquer themselves and the world!
– Dr. K Uma, Professor and Head, Department of Oral Pathology, KLES Institute of Dental Sciences, Bengaluru
Fasting for a a day is intimidating enough. So, fasting for 10 days sounds even more intimidating – not to mention daunting! I cannot imagine doing the same myself (psst: I lack the discipline!).While I was in SDMYNCH, Ujjire, for treatment last year, I was put on a juice diet for five days. At the end of the five days, I felt infinitely better. That is how you guys will also feel at the end of 10 days, I am sure… no, I am positive! Kudos to you guys for your perseverance! Wishing you all good tidings!
The Doctor is a Guru. The one who leads aspirants from darkness to light. Unless a doctor travels the path, he or she will not qualify to be a leader. I’m delighted to note Naturopathy students of Ujire are setting an example by fasting for ten days. I am certain you will inspire the world to lead a healthy life.Be Blessed by the Divine.
I eagerly read every day the experiences of the students that they write about their fast. Knowing that this experience will save many lives like mine into the future. I would have become an invalid by now if not for Naturopathy.I’ve experience the deep cleansing process that fasting brings on, and I found many amazing ways my body responds to fasting – edema in the legs, skin allergies, sinusitis – all of these have vanished. Since I’m a very busy person, I could fast only for five days until now, but this experience has shown how self-healing the body can be, and how much damage to the mind and body modern living is. I’m waiting for the next opportunity I will get, to fast again! All the very best to all of you budding doctors. The world is waiting for you to graduate and help millions of people heal themselves.
There is no faster route to good health than what you people have wonderfully been achieving. My best wishes that you can keep on the fast track!
– Dr. P Desikan, Languages Expert and Fruitarian, Bangalore.
Following a naturopathic way of life was life changing for me. After suffering for migraines and various digestive related issues, which heightened during the time before, during and after periods for the last 15 years; today, almost all my symptoms have disappeared. There have been periods of 2-3 months when I have been completely rid of headaches. The transformation was brought about through the healing process initiated by a naturopathic doctor – Dr Achyuthan Eswar.Through fasting, all of you are undergoing what could well be transformational for each of you. As you do this, you are also learning how best you can heal others suffering from various ailments. Congratulations on this and wishing you the best as you heal yourselves and learn how to heal others too. Your work is and will be life changing to so many people and I wish all of you the very best in your journey of healing.
I noticed when I stopped eating, my body felt light, like every cell was floating. Every sense of mine was sharper. I could smell better, I could taste better, I could see better, feel even the slightest touches. It felt like my body was taking a vacation. Then, I realised that this must be how we were born to feel! Instead, every time the body takes a breath, we pump it full of food. I’ve noticed, in the many that I’ve fasted, that my body becomes open to all the elements around me, in Nature. I feel like dancing with the sunlight, flowing with the water and breathing with the Earth.I look forward to hearing your stories of full sensory awakening in Nature! Have fun!
– Janani Eswar, GRIN (Growing in Nature), Bangalore
Fasting is awesome. The last time I fasted, a couple of warts on my finger tip that had been around for years simply disappeared. Great to hear all you guys are fasting too. Good job! Keep it up! Way to go!
– Aditi Eswar, Musician and Alternate Education Intern, Bangalore
You guys are doing a great job. I appreciate students for enjoying their fasting with spirit. God bless you. I miss you all a lot!
– Niharika Viral Raval, former lecturer, Yoga dept, SDMCNYS
Today we are in a crisis. People are getting chronic diseases at a young age which means it could be a lifelong sentence. These are lifestyle diseases which can be reversed by changing lifestyle. You have the power to change the destiny of our health. Always remember to promote real health.
In today’s age when we have lost track of nature and natural therapies, you all have taken the big step of trying this on yourselves, before you spread it to others.. As i have seen most people are too scared to try anything ‘new’ when it comes to natural therapies, but they dont mind popping a pill that has only 15-20% success rate! Im really pleased to know that each of you have taken part in this and have had the courage to self-experiment :):) Thank you! All the Best!!
Good going, guys! You all deserve a hearty appreciation for ur dedication. I hope you enjoyed your fasting a lot… like we did! 😉
It is an experience of a lifetime. Remember to carry the effects of fasting n d positive vibes further. Spread our learnings and be great doctors! Let’s create a new era. All d best for your future. Be in touch! Once again applause for ur great work!!

– Mrs. Deekshitha Alva, former Lecturer, Department of Anatomy, SDMCNYS
We live in a world today that has forgotten how to eat, how to dress, how to live in general. We need to be tutored in the ways of life. People living on instinct are going extinct. 🙂
The ideal people are those who could live on life. I can only wonder what those people could be like. They say the minute you put anything on the tongue, the digestion kicks in and it is the second most taxing process after the function of the brain. The body needs ‘me’ time and it hardly gets any. Even when we sleep the body is busy digesting the food you put in the previous hours instead of tending to house keeping chores.
Giving your body that space to build and heal itself is key. I could see this personally just on a 3 day fruit fast. I can imagine what a deeper and more rigorous fast could do for the body. We were told that for one person the stools were black on the 17th day because those toxins never got a change to be discarded. To be able to experience such power will instill faith in oneself on the merits of fasting like nothing else. In my experience nobody wants to listen to you if you aren’t practicing things yourself. If they had to, they might as well go to an allopath. Why would they come to you? They come to you for you have experienced what optimal health is, and how to get there is a path familiar to you…
Good luck with your efforts! 🙂
– Mayank Rungta, Khula Manch
First of all I would like to congratulate those students who undergo fasting for about ten days. I personally regard fasting as the best way to cure body and mind. When we undergo fasting and stop eating our normal food, we experience a miracle wherein our body absorbs ether, air, solar energy and water. It is not only the best medicine but also a powerful one. The four elements which we consume as food during a fast turns out to be a medicine. Among these, ether is the prime element. Fasting utilizes this ether. When we follow it, our stomach and intestines become empty. This in turn supports the vital force and purifies our body. I would also like to share something that might help you during your fast: Keep your mind calm and happy. Take enough rest. Observe the changes that is happening in your body. Don’t get involved in your emotions and avoid talking much. Do not exhaust your self by vigorous working or exercises. Sleep is very important. Pay careful attention while you break your fast. Keep up the attitude! Wish you all good health.

I just love yoga and meditation. When my daughter decided to join this course, i was the happiest. After seeing the positive changes in her through the course, with the guidance of seniors, I am even more happy. I have undertaken fruits and raw vegetables dieting of 10 days each twice in the past two years under my daughter’s guidance. I can’t do complete fasting because of my age and health problems, though I’d love to. But I loved the way I felt when I underwent the fruit diet. My heartfelt appreciation to all the fasting students. I know what mental strength is needed to take up such complete fasts. Apart from the physical benefits, it just boosts their self confidence to the level of Himalayas. 🙂 🙂 . And they will definitely turn out to be empathetic doctors when they prescribe fasting to their future patients, because they will have first hand experience. And there is no teacher like experience, right? Thanks to all those young to-be-doctors for taking up tasks which we adults hesitate to do. I am sure each one of them will come out successful and complete the remaining days of fasting with the same enthusiasm of the first few days. God bless you all.
– Indira Udupa, mother of Priyanka Udupa, student, SDM College of Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences
I just wanted to take a minute today to let you all know what a fantastic job you are doing for your school and the fasting. You all have been absolutely fantastic about turning things around and showing commitment. You all have gone over and above my best expectations. It is truly your hard work and dedication that has made a difference. I think everyone is really excited. Anyway I just wanted to let you all know that I really appreciate your hard work and dedication. Thanks and keep up the great work!
Fasting has tremendous health benefits. Fasting detoxifies one and brings a fresh lease to life. The students are doing a wonderful job and i think if we can promote the Naturopathic way of life to everyone, the world will be a better place. Every year, I would like to go on a 10 day fast to ensure my health all year round. The fast also trains you to eat only what is required for the body and not to be a slave of your tongue.
– Peter Francis, Yoga master, Kerala
I read your blogs and I am so pleased you are bringing fasting to light and documenting your experiences with it. I think teaching the importance of natural therapies is priceless. All schools should teach this and have students participate. I have just now started experimenting with fasting and my body felt incredible afterwards. It regulated my milk production, my mood was better and I look much better. The body does amazing things and I am so glad you are finding this out also and sharing it with the world through your blog!
Way to go, guys! Kudos to all the students and staff for pulling such an awesome event – and the best part is, this fast happens every year! Looking forward to the next one. Here’s wishing you all an amazing future ahead!
